Semana de la educación artísitica 2017 Por Kelsey Kelly Hernández

The first week of working in the schools here in Concepción has come to a close and I could not be more excited to share my experience. La Semana de la educaión artística  is a celebration on a national scale promoted by The Ministry of Culture and Arts here in Chile. This includes food, music and various other art forms.

In the schools we predominatly focused on one particular chilean artist, Violeta Parra. She was a singer, painter, paper maché artist, embroidered and worked with ceramics as well. She was born in San Fabián en Alico and died in Santiago. Some of her best know works are different songs she composed and preformed as they were a revival of folkloric music.

Students had the ability to visit a park that it maintained by both the state and a forestry service to create art out of recycled materials and learn a little more about both the environment in which Violeta Parra drew inspiration and the materials and process used to create  her paper maché works of art.

Another event hosted to help both students and families alike learn more about this amazing chilean icon was hosted by the school as they taught tradition embroidery techniques in true Violeta fashion as she never used a pattern or created any form of outline before starting one of her many works of art.

As this week has come to a close I have many thanks and a new deeper appreciation for Chilean culture. I watched men and women share their skills in traditional works and pass them down to so many generations to come may bask in the beauty of their cultural heritage. I also have a very special thank you for my host professors for working with me in all aspects of teaching, from classroom management to providing individual one on one based instruction. And last but not least a huge thank you to my beautiful family here that has welcomed me with open arms, feeds me the best foods and and deals with my shaky use of the subjunctive on a regular basis.

Until next week!
